    Default IM Nicholas Vettese

FM Nicholas Vettese won U-18 Open section in NAYCC and will get a direct IM title. Congratulations!!

According to FIDE rules for NAYCC there are requirements for IM/FM norms and titles:

    1. U-18. Gold - IM title. First equal - IM norm. Silver/Bronze - FM title.

    2. U-16. Gold - IM norm. First equal - FM title.

    3. U-14, U-12. Gold - FM title.

Similar rules for female WIM/WFM titles.

    According to these rules also:

    1. Richard Zheng will get FM title (Bronze U-18).
    2. Kevin Zhong will get FM title (Gold U-14).

A player needs to be at least 2200 FIDE to get a direct IM title and 2100 - for FM title. All 3 Canadians have no issues with this rule.

I read some posts on CT about "devaluation" of FIDE titles. Yes, they have a certain point. However, in Junior events the devaluation is usually not that big and a winner has a good chance to get his rating above appropriate level in the future (2400 for IM, 2300 for FM).

In recent years, FIDE took some steps to minimize the "devaluation" effect. Now it's more difficult to achieve a direct title on Zonal tournament, like Canadian Closed. Also, now direct titles are subject to rating floor, which is just 200 points below the regular level. 2200 instead of 2400 for IM and 2100 instead of 2300 for FM.

Actually, many Canadian players got their GM/IM/FM titles thanks to some rules for specific events. Some of these rules (like double norm for Olympiad, relatively easy requirements for Zonal and so on) are no longer valid.

    Just for example,

    1. Thomas Roussel-Roozmon got his extra GM norm and a title on 2010 Olympiad.

    2. Eric Hansen got his extra GM norm and a title on 2012 Olympiad. Obviously, Eric made many 2600+ performances after 2012.

    3. Nikolay Noritsyn got his IM title for winning 2007 Closed. He had 3 IM norms that time, but his FIDE was below 2400. He got his FIDE above 2500 later.

    4. Eric Lawson, Jonathan Tayar, Arthur Calugar, Vicente Lee, Duong Thanh Nha, Yuanchen Zhang and Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux got their IM title in Zonal. Only Shawn crossed 2400 so far.

    5. Michael Barron got his IM title for Continental Senior (50+), as he shared 1st place with David Cummings.

A lot of players got their FM titles (including myself) without having 2300 rating that time. Some of them crossed 2300 later.
