theguardian/2004/Chess: what is it good for - case for using it as [military] science
While many consider that chess is a science, I've never heard of it being promoted as such, say to a government. Here's an old link about researchers in Sweden and Australia looking at the value of chess to [military] science, for the understanding of real battles, at least:
