Book review: The Marshall Attack by Lalic

Point form book review by NM Kevin Pacey: The Marshall Attack by GM Bogdan Lalic (Everyman 2003)

- covers all main variations and sub-variations of the Marshall Attack and Anti-Marshall (Ruy Lopez) in detail, from both White and Black's point of view
- written by a leading opening theoretician
- Introduction provides a brief summary of reasons to play the Marshall
- the author gives much explanatory prose and analysis that falls within the book's 105 complete main games, many of which were played in the new millenium
- a possible problem is that Lalic doesn't give fully satisfactory ways for Black to avoid certain drawing lines that White has at his disposal in the Marshall Accepted, although Lalic does provide plenty of only slightly dubious ways for Black to try to win in such cases
- in short, this somewhat dated book provides a reasonably complete and compact (176 page) treatment of the Marshall and Anti-Marshall that tries to be objective, though a reader wanting to win with Black without playing clearly slightly dubious moves at times may desire help from outside of the book's pages (a dilemma Marshall players may be familiar with).
