Governors’ On-line Meeting – Closing Matters
Hi to All Governors:
Our very successful first on-line quarterly meeting will soon be drawing to a close. The schedule is:
6:00 PM EDT – Voting Closed
6:00 PM EDT – 6:30 PM EDT – Summaries of Agenda Items were posted.
8:00 PM EDT ( or as soon thereafter as possible ) – Closing Address by V-P Stijn de Kerpel
9:00 PM EDT – Adjournment
A number of important points can now be made:
1. Vote Results - totals and the names of governors voting, because of our board system, are now immediately available for all to see. Please see my comment on Motion 2010-05 concerning “ constitutional amendment “, on the voting thread.
2. Attendance – A MAJORITY of governors ( 60 % or 36/60 ) came to the meeting.
3. Extent of Voting – A whopping 92 % of those attending voted ( 33/36 )!!!
Here is the breakdown:
Bob Armstrong – voted; John Coleman – voted Ken Einarsson – voted
Egis Zeromskis – voted Ken Craft – voted Les Bunning - voted
Michael von Keitz –voted Gordon Ritchie - voted Simon Ong – voted
Paul Leblanc - voted Bill Evans - voted Mark Dutton – voted Halldor Palsson – voted Rick Pedersen – didn’t vote Ilia Bluvshtein - voted Hugh Brodie – voted Ellen Nadeau – voted Jason Lohner –voted
Chris Mallon – voted Michael Barron – voted Hal Bond – voted Gary Gladstone – voted David Steer – didn’t vote Patrick McDonald - voted Vlad Rekhson – voted Garvin Nunes – voted Fred McKim – voted
Stijn de Kerpel –voted Alick Tsui – voted Lynn Stringer – didn’t vote
David Lavin – voted Valer Eugen Demian - voted Herb Langer – voted
Eric van Dusen – voted Mark Bluvshtein – voted John Erickson - voted
4. Debate – As can be seen from the agenda item summaries now posted, numbers of points of view on issues were often raised; governors dialogued with each other, presenting facts, asking questions, and arguing their positions. We have shown that our board is a good medium for this kind of debate.
5. Decision-Making Timing – With our on-line meeting format, first discussion of motions can be held in the first 3 1/2 days of the meeting, and voting in the last three days. Decisions can now be made in a week, rather than in 9 months as was happening under our Governors’ Letters system. This will greatly encourage governor participation, and remove one of the factors leading to governor apathy.
6. Meeting Procedures – They have proven to be very useable, and flexible. They allow governors to come and go as their daily schedules allow. No one is ever “ late “. Voting goes smoothly. They are simple and understandable. One glitch appeared which the Governors’ Voting Modernization Subcommittee will look into.
Our experiment has proved most successful – there were no proposed rule changes, no negative comments about the format; and good participation by the governors ( which can only get better as governors get more used to this format and the use of the Governors’ Discussion Board ).
I think we governors will now be able to say, justifiably, that we have moved into the 21st century ! Thanks to all who made it happen.
