A near-record turnout on a truly awful weather day -- 10mm freezing rain -- is a good sign for the state of chess in Ottawa.

Thanks to everyone who came out; let's hope your auto insurance doesn't go up as a result.

Armando Valdizon won with 4.5/5.

The phantom Aris Marghetis was =1st on the strength of four full-point byes, but had an inferior tie-break (the one weakness of full point byes). Sorry Aris, but no full point byes in the last round.

No full point byes asked for or given today. :o

Bill Doubleday showed that he grew up before Sesame Street was a TV staple, and so still has something to learn about sharing. As it is, he went 5/5 to win what was one of the smallest turnouts ever for an RA Sunday Rapid... a small price to pay for the first nice weather of the year in Ottawa, IMHO.

Same time next week.

A drizzly day means more chess, with 19 players including two first-timers. Bill Doubleday and Halldor Palsson drew with each other and won the rest of their games to finish =1st with 4.5/5.

NO RAPID NEXT WEEKEND -- May 6, as there is an EOCA tournament in Arnprior that weekend.
Sunday Rapid returns May 13.

Alex Davies won the Sunday Rapid with 4.5/5, conceding a draw in the last round to the woeful TD.
Only one of the 13 players who competed in the RACC Sunday Rapid on Mother's Day remembered to bring his mother: Daniel Xu, who finished clear second with a trail of experts in his wake.

Those who did show up, in addition to playing, had the added fun of picking through some of Stijn De Kerpel's chess books -- which he is culling before an upcoming move.

Same time next week.

PS: I decided to leave in the "dates" --- courtesy of f****** MS Word, which insists on formatting based on the assumption that all its users are morons --- on the same ground I that I think that southern Confederate statues should not be removed: they should stand as a permanent reminder of how awful were the people who created them.

More good weather means more small turnouts... but also three new players!
Armando Valdizon tops the cross-table again, tied with the unscrupulous TD, who (once again) uses a full-point-bye to sneak onto the podium.

The RA Sunday Rapids continue... with or without posted results :P

Good weather generally means poor turnouts (as does World Cup soccer, it seems) so recent turnouts have been lower than usual, but quality... quantity... etc.

Based on last week's results, it seems that wherever it was that David Gordon and Bill Doubleday went for lunch, it was:

slow service (they both arrived late)
good for their chess (!?)

For the sake of all who might not be fully informed about the RA club's Sunday chess policies, could someone indicate if there is no visitor's charge for coming out to the club this day of the week, and/or no charge for playing in the (informal) events posted about in this thread.

As far as I am aware, yes, this is the case, no charge to come out.

It has been free for the past 3 years, and continues to be for the rest of the summer.

We may change that in September.

Thanks to Lazar (and Abdelaziz) for running the Sunday rapids for the past two weeks, and thanks again to Lazar for posting the results online.

I was taking pix at the 2018 Canadian Junior final round on Sunday. I will be back, but there is NO SUNDAY RAPID at the RACC on Sunday August 19 as the Smiths Falls Open will be that weekend, and we don't hold rapid tournaments which conflict with EOCA events. If you want to play chess that weekend, try this (http://www.miltonchess.ca/images/cfc/2018_smith_falls_open.pdf)

The RACC Sunday rapid returns August 26.

This year - due to increased registrations (27 and counting), I'm running it with 2 sections: Open (for anyone 1600 or over, basically) - and - an U1600 section - no matter what your rating or skill level is, you will get a good challenge!

Also - like last year - if there is an odd number of people in either section, I will be available to play as a floater player to ensure everyone who is at the tournament who wants a game, gets a game, regardless of their section, rating, or performance in the tournament itself - so no need to worry about getting a 'forced bye'.

If have any questions, please see the main thread for the tournament in this forum for more information, or you can contact me at my email address:

jsztukachess at gmail dot com

I also will be at the RA Chess Club on Thursday August 16 to take additional registrations. For convenience, you can always send me an email at the above address to be added to the pre-registered list as well.

After a week off for the Smiths Falls Open, the RACC Sunday Rapid returned... but with only 11 players -- kind of a let-down from the 56 (including three 2018 Olympians) we had on Thursday.

Armando Valdizon hung a piece in a good position in his last-round game, but still finished atop the mini-field with 4/5.

Special mention for Neven Sass, who seems to have been doing some studying!

That's a cool note about Neven, he's one of my private students. I thought(?!) he was improving briskly, but Sunday was a nice confirmation. The breadth of his memory is impressive. When he came over the next day for his weekly lesson, he was very excited! Thanks for running these John, a lot of people seem to be benefitting from them.

Proves that lightning can strike! I should note that while John graciously (?) resigned when faced with the loss of a couple of pieces, Bill forced me to mate him with K+Q against lone K. He must have been studying with the same coach who tells the kids never to resign.

With so many players away at serious tournaments (Batumi, Varennes) or happily spending quality time with loved ones (Thanksgiving), only six lost souls had nothing better to do on a Sunday afternoon than play rapid chess at the RA.

The TD showed limited hospitality, gobbling all the points that were on the table, and giving back only one exchange in a winning position.

Thanks, John, for putting up with a slow learner. Meanwhile, John was so excited to be liberated from his habitual TD duties that he overpressed in a dead drawn endgame against Daniel Xu, with predictable consequences:)

Gordon Ritchie once again muscled his way into the TD chair, leaving the old TD with nothing to look forward to doing but losing badly without the comfort of his usual excuses about "TD distractions" :(...

Christian Collins tied for 1st with the new TD, who gave himself a full-point bye in the final round. Complaints should be sent to:

SwissSys troubles and a sick and grumpy TD are responsible for this late report; here's hoping two weeks in the Bahamas will cure what ails Gordon R.

Apparently, Paul Beckwith and Christian Collins won the Sunday Rapid with 4/5, despite Christian taking the last round off (!) and Paul somehow getting a full point bye for showing up late in round 1 (?).

Congratulations to Christian Collins, who won the February Grand Prix -- scoring 12.5 out of a possible 15 points in the first three events, before coasting in on a victory lap with a relatively shameful 1.5/5 this weekend. For his prize he chose NIC 2018 #8, and generously gave it to the 2nd place finisher, Mike Schofield.

Only 9 stalwarts survived the triple-whammy -- Daylight Saving Time, freezing rain, and the inevitable hangovers and regrets from celebrating Fischer's birthday the night before -- to compete in the RA Sunday Rapid. A third unannounced room change in one week was made up for by a free platter of warm baked treats from the RA Centre.... and only a crazy person could think it was anything but an unlucky coincidence that this first-time-ever sticky bun delivery came on the one day in 12+ years that the Club was using freshly cleaned-pieces. Only a 1 in 1152 shot... nothing out of the ordinary... move along.

Curiously, the TD once again won the tournament. As the quality of his play could hardly account for this result, some speculate that this is yet more evidence that we live in a simulation.

These seem to be well run events. Is there a reason you choose not to have them rated ? I guess everyone would have to pay an extra $2 (to cover the rating fee) and be CFC members, but maybe you'd get more players to your regular CFC tournaments.

Sundays have long been a problem at the Ottawa club. With a few brief periods of exception, Sundays were not organized and very poorly attended. Over the last few years, John Upper has turned that around with the format we now use and continues to be the principal force behind our success.
We use the Sunday events to give our members a chance to play in a more informal setting, putting the fun back into what has become a very competitive scene; and to attract non-members to the game and hopefully to the club. Many of the players on Sunday are not club or CFC members (often playing mainly online) but a small but growing number get hooked and join the mainstream.
It is telling, however, how many are interested but then balk at the idea of paying CFC membership fees plus RA membership fees plus chess club fees although for a keen player it remains a remarkable bargain.

Twenty-one players took part in the Rapid Tournament on Sunday 2 June. Notably, more than half were juniors including the top rated, Rachel Miller. On a beautiful sunny Sunday 9 June, 17 chess mad enthusiasts huddled indoors at the RA centre to play in the weekly Sunday Active Tournament. The winner with 4.5 out of 5 points was young wizard Johnathan Han who beat the top-rated Rachel Miller and Christian Collins in the last two rounds for the win. Rachel and Kamal Balazadeh ended tied for second place.

12 humans thought it would be better to sit indoors at chess than enjoying a 24 degree sunny Ottawa day.

OTOH, four of them realized their mistake and left without playing all five rounds, so maybe there's some hope for chess addicts elsewhere.

Christian Collins not only learned how to do pairings using old-fashioned pairing cards, but still had enough focus to win the tournament

Good showing with 15 players so the TD had to sit out until round 4 when a player dropped out.

2019 CYCC U10 Champion Jonathan Han went straight through the tournament with a perfect 5 points, beating Ben Kellar and David Gordon along the way.

Douglas Graham and Derek Wang came in second with 3.5 points each.

A disappointingly small turnout on a beautiful Sunday afternoon was followed by a disappointingly predictable finish with the top-rated players -- Jason Liang and the TD -- tied for first with 4/5.

Note: Jason has been doing a serious commute for this event -- http://www.uschess.org/msa/MbrDtlMain.php?16041488 -- so it would be nice to see a few of the local Masters come out to give him a harder time.

Ottawa's last Sunday of the summer was far too beautiful to spend indoors playing chess... so only 10 players showed up for the Rapid, including two new players and two returnees.

The TD raced out to a lead on the strength of two forced byes, and made less severe blunders than his unfortunate opponents to limp home with the win.

Grand Prix
The four September 2019 events were a Grand Prix, where the player with the most points from their best three events wins their choice of book prize or the latest issue of New in Chess. The overall winner (unfortunately) was the TD, who claimed the "Karpov: Move by Move" book by Sam Collins... and decided to give a prize to the second-place finisher, who turned out to be the one player in Ottawa who can be guaranteed to say that he needs another chess book like a hole in the head: Gordon Ritchie.

Best 3 of 4 results:

John Upper 14
Gordon Ritchie 9.5
Zhou Fang 8.5
Johnathan Han 8 (on only 2 events!)
Kamal Balazadeh 7.5

Next Grand Prix: probably November.
Book prizes include: The King J.H.Donner; Nottingham 1936, Alekhine (algebraic ed.); Heroes of Classical Chess & The Giants of Strategy, double volume by Pritchett and MacDonald.

Thanks, but I'm not that nice.

The books were paid for from the $2 fees I collected from non-RACC members who played in the Sunday Rapid over the past year+. The remainder paid for the paint for the cabinet.

PS: If no one stops Armando's reign of Sunday Rapid terror, I may have to come back to stop him myself on Jan 12... or die trying.
