This sounds very good. Can anyone spell out what some of the more tangible benefits for the CFC, and for chess in Canada, would be?

edit:
P.S.: Part of a blurb from Google:
"Chess requires physical exertion as mental exertion manifests itself physically." - Oxford dictionary

Congratulations! It is an nice accomplishment and only the first step towards getting federal funding for the CFC.

In many countries, the Federal Government gives money to the National Olympic Committee who is in charge of redistribution to the approved Federations. This is not the case in Canada. The money we want is distributed by Sports Canada and this organization still stubbornly refuses to finance any non-physical sport. Sports Canada does not claim that Chess is not a sport, it asserts that some activities, whether they are sports or not, are unworthy of being funded with taxpayers money.

Actually, Sports Canada and its affiliate organizations are heavily geared toward physical sports. A BSc. in Physical Education is consider equivalent to a level 1 coaching certification. That doesn't work for chess. Sports Canada is hevily skewed towards High Performance Sports. Furthermore, many Constitutional changes would have to be made before getting funding. The most controversial being the creation of an Appeal Policiy http://crdsc-sdrcc.ca/eng/appeal-policies-nso .

The more I learn about Sports Canada, the more I become convinced that we should strive to have Mind Sports Canada approved by the Minster. The mandate would be the same as Sports Canada. brings financing to Federations, Athletes (chess players).. but the policies would be geared towards Mind Sports. Mind Sports Canada should at lest unite Draught, Go, Bridge and Chess. Incorporating Mind Sports Canada is easy, convincing the Minister to finance it on a recurrent basis would be much harder.

Vote for me for Mind Sports Canada president :).
