The World Championship Cycle is now being run by AGON a firm which was awarded the commercial rights to the world championship cycle for the next few years.

If you look at the FIDE events schedule, you will see that once we get the next World Championship Match in (next Fall) everything will fall back into a neat two year cycle.

The immediate benefit to the chess fan, is the re-introduction of the Grand_Prix Cycle. It's set up as 6 event cycle over a two year period. This first such cycle (2012/13) is condensed into 13 months, starting this Sept 20th and finishing next Oct. The 1st event goes in London, ENG.

Most of the best players in the world will be present among the 18 participants (each player plays in four tournaments, with their top three events counting). I would guess that the top two finishers would qualify for a 2014 Candidates Tournament.

Particpants in order of rating: Radjabov, Karjakin, Nakamura, Carauna, Morozevich, Ivanchuk, Grischuk, Topalov, Svidler, Wang Hao, Gelfand, Gashimov, Leko, Ponomariov, Mamedyarov, Dominguez Perez, Giri, and Kasimdzhanov.

Carlsen, Aronian, Kramnik, and Anand declined their invitations, while Kamsky was originally listed as a particpant, but in the final list was replaced by Gashimov, without any explanation.
