I am pleased to announce that the governors have approved Club d’échecs du Collège de Maisonneuve as host for these two events, which will run concurrently from August 1-7, 2012. As always, more details to follow!

Both the 2012 Men's zonal and the 2012 Women's zonals will be held in Montréal from August 1 to August 7 . The tournament is co-organized by the FQE and the Collège de Maisonneuve. Some details (such as the venue) are still to come, but here are the main lines :
-Canadian closed -
Guaranteed prize fund of 6000$
9 rounds on 7 days
Rating requirements of 2200 CFC, 2100 FQE/FIDE
Organizers from all across Canada will receive the possibility to organize qualification tournaments.

-Women's closed-
A major sponsorship from Goddesschess (http://www.goddesschess.com/) will give a total prize fund of 1450$ and will allow the tournament to be held on 7 days, at the same time as the Canadian closed. The winner of the 2011 edition will also receive free accomodation.



Canadian closed
Dates: August 1-7, 2012

Format: 9 Round Swiss, FQE, CFC and FIDE rated
Eligibility: All players must meet the requirements of Article 807 in the CFC Handbook, and be eligible to compete for Canada in the World Chess Cup. Exceptions need to be approved by the organizers and the CFC executive.
Players with a CFC rating over 2200, players with a FIDE/FQE rating over 2100.
Provincial Association and Territorial nominees, with a minimum rating of 2000.
FIDE titled FM, WIM or higher Canadian Junior Champion and Canadian Women’s Champion
Players qualified by a qualification tournament.

Wednesday, 5:30 pm, opening ceremony
Rd 1: Wednesday, 6pm
Rd 2: Thursday, 6 pm
Rd 3: Friday, 6pm
Rd 4: Saturday, 10am Rd 5: Saturday, 4pm
Rd 6: Sunday, 10 am Rd 7: Sunday, 4pm
Rd 8: Monday, 6pm
Rd 9: Tuesday, 1 pm
Playoffs and closing ceremony: as soon as possible after round 9.
Guaranteed prize fund (6000$):

Canadian champion: Travel to the World Cup in Tromso, Norway (2000$)


Time Control: 40/90, G/30 + 30 seconds from move one.
Entry Fees: 250$ per player (275$ on site).
Accommodation: Many bed and breakfast nearby and hotels such as Le St-André http://www.hotelsaintandre.ca which is at about 15 minutes by metro of the tournament site with rooms starting at 84$/night.
Free accommodation and meal allowance based on double occupancy for defending champion and vice champion, free accommodation for Women’s champion and GMs living outside of Quebec.

Goddesschess Women's closed
Dates: August 1-7, 2012

Format: 9 Round Swiss, FQE, CFC and FIDE rated
Eligibility: Women with a CFC rating over 1700 or with a FIDE/FQE rating over 1600. Provincial Women champion (see Handbook, section 11).

1- Travel prize for the Women’s world championship in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia (1000$) + 200$

3- 100$
100$ added to the prize fund for each player over 12 (66% 2nd prize, 33% 3rd prize). Free accommodation for 2011 Women’s champion.
Time Control: 40/90, G/30 + 30 seconds from move one.
Entry Fees: 175$ per player (200$ on site).
