A bit of a lull in the tournament calendar...
Zone 3.3 in Eastern Asia, encompassing Philippines, Vietnam, etc finished yesterday with Susanto Megaranto, Indonesia, emerging as the winner. The 23 year old Indonesian is his country's top ranked player. He became a GM at age 17. Taking the second golden ticket was Mark Paragua, Philippines on tie-break.
The comments keep coming in from all levels after the recent Candidates matches. Basically the system which in place saw 27 out of 30 classical time control games end in a draw. See any of the major web sites for more. Nobody has criticized Boris Gelfand as the Challenger, who will be reaching the possible pinnacle of his chess career at 43.
Meanwhile Vishy Anand is getting ready to face off with Alexei Shirov in a day or two in Leon for the Leon Masters. I had previously thought this was Advanced Chess (players were allowed a computer aid), but it is "just" classical chess.
