This coming week, on December 2, 24-year old Canadian Women’s International Master and current reigning Canadian Women’s Chess Champion, Dina Kagramanov, attempts the biggest feat of her chess career so far, winning the Women’s World Chess Championship.

She will be one of 64 of the top women chess players from around the globe playing in a knockout tournament for the big one, the Women’s World Championship.

Realistically, however, it is an uphill battle. She is ranked # 60 of 64, and there are many strong GM’s in the field. Her first task will be to get past the fourth-ranked Grandmaster from Georgia, Nana Dzagnidze, rated 2551. Dina’s rating is 2101. Defending her crown will be Russian World Champion, Alexandra Kosteniuk, rated 2507.

As a junior chess player, Dina was the Canadian Girls Under 18 years old Champion. At the recent world chess Olympiad in September/October, she played 2nd board for Canada and scored a very respectable 60 % ( 5.5/9 pts. ), second-highest on the team of 5 women.

Dina will do a good job of representing Canada at the Women’s World Chess Championship.

Canadian WIM Dina Kagramanov lost both games in Rd. 1 of the Women's World Chess Championship to the Georgian GM Nana Dzagnidze.

This knocks her out of the tournament, and Nana moves into Rd. 2 of this 6-round knockout tournament.

Thanks to Dina for putting up a good fight, and representing Canada well !

I was following her two games (as time permitted) and was happy to see her give it her best shot. It seems like a LONG way to go for 2 games though... I guess it would be hard to turn down an invitation at that level, but I really find the knock-out format too simple-minded and wish they (FIDE) would use a format that would at least permit contenders to play more than 2 games minimum...
