    Olympiad selection lists

I think the CFC jumped the gun naming the selection lists on its Forum web site. Its own rules (according to CFC Handbook, Section 12, on the CFC's web site - http://www.chess.ca/section_12.shtml) state that the period for eligible minimum number of games (10) goes for 180 days before the start of the Olympiad. That means games played until Monday, March 22 should count.

So, by posting the "FINAL" list too soon, some players are denied a chance to qualify. Once again, the CFC is ... breaking its own rules? misinterpreting its own rules? interpreting its rules as is convenient?

Games are not counted until they are rated. Next CFC rating calculation will be next Wednesday, March 24, less than 180 days before the Olympiad.

Re: Olympiad selection lists - CFC is wrong

    Ilia,

So you are going to use laziness as your excuse? The rules say that games count if they are played more than 180 days before the Olympiad. That means all games played through Monday, March 22 count. You should use the March 24 rating list, and eliminate games from March 23 & 24 by hand.

What I find remarkable is that 9 of the top 12 women haven't played much CFC-rated chess. Six of them haven't played any CFC-rated chess at all.

    Default Olympiad Stuff

    Hi,

Maybe I am too demanding as a fan. I do follow the Olympiads and Canada's games before Topalov, Kramnik, Ivanchuk, Carlsen.
But... this has been puzzling me for a while. I don't understand how CFC set a minimum of 10 games to qualify for Olympiad.
Isn't this kind of a big deal? Represent Canada, most professional players, some paid expenses, etc...? Are these 10 games over the course of a year, or just in 2010, or since the last Olympiad? How are 10 games indicative of... anything? 10 games could be as little as one , long tournament (which in Canada is extremely rare or even non-existent, but I've seen / heard of 11 rounds foreign tournaments regularly). Do these 10 games have to be played against adequate competition? To me it seems logical that the best (and highest rated) players should go, but I'd consider activity important too.
Incidentally, the Olympiad has more rounds than games required to qualify to play in it.
Also, how does Canada's selection process compare with other countries?

Just wanted to clarify that... my comments apply for both men and women, not just women, even if the response ended up on this thread.

    Hi Alex:

The 10 games have to be played within the year , 6 months prior to the Olympiad. The details were:

    Olympiad starts September 19, 2010
Highest ratings starting March 19, 2009
March 19, 2010 is the termination date for playing required games.

It seems to me to be a pretty minimum activity criteria. If you really want to play for the team, it's easy to get the 10 games in.

It's partly to discourage people from simply "sitting" on a rating that's good enough to get them qualified. It was also originally proposed to be 10 rated games in Canada to encourage local participation and support our tournaments, but certain people managed to get that watered down.

I personally argued for a much greater number of games. Initially I wanted 25, if I recall correctly. That's still only 5 weekend events, or three major ones, in the space of a year, not unreasonable in my opinion.

I also suggested that at least half of the games had to be played in Canada, whatever the final number ended up being.
