    Default 5-Player Teams

    Hi Egis:

One may always check with the FIDE Handbook to be up-to-date:

    01. Chess Olympiad
D.II.01 Regulations for the Chess Olympiad

    1. General

1.1 The Chess Olympiad is the principal team contest organized by FIDE.

    1.1.7.2 Players
The national teams of federations affiliated to FIDE.
    Open: 4 players, 1 reserve
    Women: 4 players, 1 reserve

But under the Section 12 of the CFC Handbook it seems out of date:

    1205. The Selection Committee

The CFC Executive shall appoint a Selection Committee consisting of two well known and respected individuals who are of at least master strength and have knowledge of the Canadian chess community.

    (a)

    (b) The Selection Committee shall select two players for the National Team and one player for the Women’s team, taking into account the players’ recent results, potential for improvement and such other factors as they consider relevant. These selections shall be made no later than 165 days before the start of the Olympiad.

The national and women's teams are now the same 5 players - why the difference in number chosen by committee - or was it never updated?

    Bob
( P.S. Before editing, I had mistakenly thought Canada was sending only a 4-player team )

D.II.01 Regulations for the Chess Olympiad

Anyone know why Canada is only sending 4-player teams??

    Bob
Seems to me, the last several teams were lucky enough to be assembled and to get there. If we cannot send a coach or help with most of the costs, then a reserve player is hard to budget... maybe just send a case of Cold/FX along with the 4 team members?

Where have you seen written about only 4 players?

I've seen only mentioning the purpose of the list - 3 players, with additional information about Canadian Champion (+1).
About "One player decided upon by the Selection Committee" was no word yet.

    Hi Egis:

It was my misreading of the Handbook that led me to wrongly think Canada was sending only a 4-player team; I forgot the Can. Champion was on the team - my error.

But the Handbook is inconsistent between sections:

    1205. The Selection Committee

The CFC Executive shall appoint a Selection Committee consisting of two well known and respected individuals who are of at least master strength and have knowledge of the Canadian chess community.

    (a)

    (b) The Selection Committee shall select two players for the National Team and one player for the Women’s team,

In the section you quoted, it says the Selection Committee selects one player.

Just pointing out that the Handbook needs amending here - this section was never changed when FIDE went to 5-player reams for both national and women.

The section 12 was changed, but not 1205.c with passed 2008-03
    my collections on the motion:

    Motion 2008-03
Moved by Lyle Craver / Bob Gillanders
That Handbook paragraph 1206(b) dealing with the Canadian Olympic team be
amended to read: (b) National Team: The National Team shall consist of FIVE players,
    as follows:
    (i) The Canadian Champion, as of 180 days before the start of the Olympiad.
(ii) The TWO highest rated players on the Selection Rating list.
(iii) Two players decided upon by the Selection Committee.
Rationale: this motion is intended to bring the CFC into alignment with FIDE which
has mandated 5 player teams for the 2008 Dresden Olympiad (Note: the capitalized
words original read ‘six’ and ‘three’ respectively)
     First Discussion in 07-08GL1.pdf
Second Discussion in 07-08GL2.doc and 07-08GL4.pdf
Final Vote in 07-08GL3.pdf and 07-08GL5.pdf
     Results of Voting in 07-08GL4.pdf
Voting suspended as an amendment has been received:
Motion 2008-3 Amendment Smith/Jaeger That Handbook paragraph 1206b
dealing with the Canadian Olympic team be amended to read: b National Team:
The National Team shall consist of FIVE players, as follows:
i The Canadian Champion, as of 180 days before the start of the Olympiad.
ii The THREE highest rated players on the Selection Rating List.
iii ONE player decided upon by the Selection Committee.
In GL#6 Motion transformed to: (b)National Team:The National Team shall
consist of six players, as follows: (i) The Canadian Champion, as of 180 days
before the start of the Olympiad.
(ii) The three highest rated players on the Selection Rating list.
. (iii)Two players decided upon by the Selection Committee.
(c)Women’s Team: TheWomen’s Team shall consist of four players, as follows:
(i)The Canadian Women’s Champion, as of 180 days before the start of the
    Olympiad.
(ii) The two highest rated female players on the Selection Rating list.
(iii) One player decided upon by the Selection Committee.
Our existing rules attempt to apply the same selection principles to two teams of
different sizes. Now both the National team and Women’s team are five player
teams as per FIDE’s rules. Therefore I am ruling that the selection criteria be the
same for both teams. Since both teams currently include the Canadian Champion
from 180 days before the Olympiad, it comes down to this choice for the
other 4 players. Please choose between:
Option One: 2 players from the Selection Rating List and 2 players chosen by the Selection Committee
Option Two: 3 players from the Selection Rating List and 1 player chosen by the Selection Committee
Option Three: Neither of the above (in this case the floor is open for
other options) Votes for option 1: (6) Barron, Duff, Langer, Luiting, McDonald,
    Wright
Votes for option 2: (6) Bluvshtein, Craft, Craver, D´enomm´ee, Haley, Profit
    Votes for option 31)Wu
    Abstention1) Gillanders
and here with the passed second option appeared inconsistency, which required a new amendment to 1205. (or maybe it just goes (went) automatically

    Default Olympiad Rating Selection Lists

From the CFC " News " Forum on May 3/11:

The CFC Regular Chess Post – May 3/11.

FIDE Chess Olympiad – August 27 – Sept. 10, 2012 – Handbook, s. 1204(a) - The CFC Executive shall appoint a Selection Committee (1205) no later than 180 days before the start of the Olympiad = Wed., Feb. 29/12 = start of the selection process ( s. 1207 ). CFC was to start publishing qualifying ratings of team candidates the year prior to the start of the selection process ( s. 1207 ) = Mon., Feb. 28/11. The selection is based on the average of the player’s highest CFC rating and highest FIDE rating during the year. CFC acknowledges that the Executive have not yet announced the new Olympiad Coordinator, and is behind this year on starting the publication of the qualifying rating lists ( none have been published in March or April ), but it will be dealt with.

I would suggest we get down to work on this next week, as it probably involves Hal, and he has his hands full at the moment.
