Here is a contrarian's view of the World Junior Chess Championship ( from Mig Greengard's Daily Dirt Chess Blog ):

" I keep wondering at the relevance of this event [ the WJCC ], but plenty of strong players keep showing up. With such a high age limit and so many top players in the world under it these days who don't bother to play, it seems an anachronism. But I suppose as long as they keep finding organizers to profiteer host the event and players keep showing up, it does no harm. It's a nice plum for the world's many national junior events. "

Regardless, I still think this tournament is great international experience for a Canadian Junior, and CFC has to find a way to be able to send a representative in a year when our Canadian Junior Champion is not attending.

Bob, the same article has simple comment too:
"@Mig:"David Howell..instead of both playing at the ETC..I keep wondering at the relevance of this event".
Because the world junior champ gets a spot in the world cup? Nice plan-B I guess, in case they don't make it the regular way.."
As the prove I give you the 2009 World Cup players list at http://ugra-chess.ru/eng/participant_e.htm with:
    C) Junior World Champions 2007 & 2008:
    05. A. Adly (EGY)
    06. A. Gupta (IND)
Thus, we should not treat the World Junior championship the same as other open. The CFC should take all care to have its participant in the World Junior Championship.

The advertisment on monroi site (http://monroi.com/2009-canadian-junior-chess-championship-home.html):"The Canadian Junior Chess Championship is a qualifier for the World Junior being held in Mar del Plata, Argentina from 16 to 29 October 2009.
Winner will receive funding toward travel to the World Junior.
    "

Somebody was smart enough not to put the year towards which World Junior the fund will be given (2009, 2010 etc
    ---

I think, you should try to reach young players (starting at U8 and older), their parents and coaches, what they think about the prize distribution practise at Junior championship.

    Default World Girls' Championship

At the same time as the World Junior is on, there is also an important tournament getting less publicity, the World Girls' Championship. Here are the top standings after Rd. 7:

    Rk. Name Rtg FED 1.Rd 2.Rd 3.Rd 4.Rd 5.Rd 6.Rd 7.Rd 8.Rd Pts. TB1 TB2 Rp

I don't know if Canada has ever sent a participant to this tournament ( anyone know? ).

It seems to me that our own WIM Yuanling Yuan ( highest Can. FIDE rated female - 2202; highest Can. CFC rated female with the Canadian federation - 2281 ) would not be out of place in those ratings. It would have been a great international experience for her.

CFC needs to figure out a way to send a representative in future to this tournament, and the World Junior Championship.
