Friends of North Bay/northeastern Ontario chess in the 1980s-90s will remember Carsten Jorgensen who, sadly, lost a battle with cancer on 26 February 2024.

Carsten was a North Bay Chess Club champion, club president, TD, and not a stranger at tournaments down south. Above all else, he was a class act, all around gentlemen and good sport, both at and away from the board.

One funny story that illustrates his pleasant personality...we were attending the Northeastern Ontario chess championship at New Liskeard. It was February and we were driving back to North Bay on what was probably the coldest night of that winter. Unfortunately, Carsten's car started to break down and actually caught on fire! Later when we were sitting in the back of a police cruiser waiting for the fire dept. and tow truck to clear the scene and get a ride back home to North Bay Carsten somehow found the humour in the situation and burst out into big belly laugh. LOL

Perhaps his greatest chess thrill was meeting his idol and fellow Dane, Bent Larsen, and taking him fishing during the North Bay International tournament.
