I wonder if this item could be offered with a SQUARE tube, instead of a round one. Round tubes are a nuisance to store.

If you like square boxes, we have the Completly Chess 2 (foam board, weighted pieces and square box) at 15$ but if someone is interested in the same set with light pieces instead of weighted pieces, I can arrange a better price. If you are interested and wish to discuss this, please e-mail me at fronnad@yahoo.ca.

When you buy school chess tubes, they are packed in boxes of 12 or 15 - that might be the storage you wish.

I have about 400 chess sets, so I'm not likely to be buying any more for a while. With the round tubes, if you stand them on end they are unstable, and if you lay them on the side they roll around, and cannot be stacked.

Square tubes, sold as shipping tyubes, seem to make more sense. Like these : http://www.office1000.com/discount/mailers-tube.html

Look for "circles in a circle". Quite interesting topic, e.g., http://www.ime.usp.br/~egbirgin/packing/packing_by_nlp/

Of course, the problem is not limited only to a circle.

Clearly, the square or rectangular format makes stacking easier, but given limited storage space (of what dimension and shape?) can you store more of one than the other? Interesting problem.

http://www2.stetson.edu/~efriedma/ma...c/archive.html has a topic-of-the-month archive of some of these types of problems. Circle-packing does have another application, but can be probably said to be more related to coding theory than chess.
