    Default The experience of flow in chess and in life

    Has anyone experienced flow in their life? Have you experienced flow in the context of playing a game of chess? Have you been able to return to the feeling of effortless grace on multiple occasions? Can you return there at will or out of necessity?

    The 8 Characteristics of Flow

    Csikszentmihalyi describes eight characteristics of flow:

    1. Complete concentration on the task;
    2. Clarity of goals and reward in mind and immediate feedback;
    3. Transformation of time (speeding up/slowing down);
    4. The experience is intrinsically rewarding;
    5. Effortlessness and ease;
    6. There is a balance between challenge and skills;
    7. Actions and awareness are merged, losing self-conscious rumination;
    8. There is a feeling of control over the task.

    Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is considered the authority on the state of flow by virtue of his writing books and scholarly articles about the topic.

    I have experienced flow a few times while playing chess and a few more times in other areas within the martial arts and also in situations of violence or near violence. Some of the best experiences were at parties, clubbing or dancing.
