There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio.
The 1970s decade featured the worldwide Fischer Boom to chess' popularity, climaxing with the American's convincing 1972 WCC match victory over Spassky. There was a high rate of decisive games in that match, as there was in the 1978 WCC match featuring Karpov vs. the defector Korchnoi, who lost by the narrowest of margins. When the decade ended, there was still the faint hope that Fischer would come out of retirement as a title challenger, but Karpov was already seen as a worthy champion and a great strategist. The decade saw the rise, or continued rise, of a number of interesting major chess openings, such as the Benko Gambit, Pirc and Sveshnikov Sicilian for Black, and the English and Reti Openings for White. The international production Chess Informator (and its associated Encyclopedia of Chess Openings) also became popular, especially with serious players.
