We have received a letter addressed to the Canadian Government from the Russian Government informing us that Kirsan would be the next president of FIDE once again. I have a feeling that something got lost in the translation to English.

lol. A good question would be ... where did the error originate? Was it the GoC's "accidental" error? Given the virulent Russophobia of the current government in Ottawa, nothing would be surprising here. Our Minister or Foreign Affairs, for example, is persona non grata in the RF. And that was BEFORE she became the Minister! I think it is unprecedented in Canadian diplomatic history.

Or was it the Russian Embassy's error? A clumsy, translation? Or was it not an error at all? That would be the most interesting of all.

    Fascinating.

No. I think the interesting translation came from the Russian government.

Oops. From a further reading the translation might have come from the Canadian department of foreign affairs. Perhaps someone who can read Russian would comment on the translation. It seems odd that the Russian government would send a letter in Russian to the Canadian government.

In the translation: "a decision taken by ... Kirsan.. to be re-elected for the next term. The elections will be held during..."

It might be automatic translation without much thinking about the single Russian word "pereizbirat'sja". However, the whole text is quite clear - they again are looking for the support, especially knowing that the CFC openly supported last time.

I think that we should vote for whoever is not Illyumzhinov. He promised us $80,000 we received $20,000. It is a principled matter.

Agreed Vlad. I was surprised to hear about Kirsan's intentions, particularly after the straw vote at the Executive Board meeting in Antalya. Support from African President Lewis Ncube and former ECU President Silvio Danailov are not ringing endorsements. Silvio was banished for 18 months and Lewis is also under scrutiny for alleged financial wrong doing.

Who we vote for will depend on who is running. It is possible that we will abstain. If Hal jumps in the ring we will vote for him.

    Filatov re-elected by wide margin
    Sunday, 04 February 2018 15:56

"Andrey Filatov was re-elected President of the Russian Chess Federation with 56 votes, Ivan Starikov got 14 votes and Zaurbek Malsagov 1 vote. As it was anticipated, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov pulled out before the voting took place. Sergey Nesterov and Eduard Suboch also withdrew their candidatures.

It came as a surprise that the XIII Congress of the Russian Chess Federation encouraged also Anatoly Karpov to run for FIDE President by providing moral support both for him and Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
