The whole CYCC qualifier system is in need of a reboot or rethink. We had a tournament in Windsor but the $200 minimum payment to the CFC seems a bit onerous for organizers in small centers especially where we already had four children qualified for CYCC via playing in WYCC 2011. Some of the parents were looking for a way to skip OYCC and go direct to CYCC which would be unfortunate as OYCC is a useful tournament for youth chess on its own.

Hopefully the paucity of YCCs will not unduly hurt attendance at CYCC 2012.

Most people agree that a national championship should not be the first tournament for inexperienced players. Most YCCs are 30-minute chess, no need to record moves, which seems like a poor qualification for CYCC, which is slow chess, must record.

Is "qualifying" via an active tournament, never having recorded moves, what is needed?

    John,

    You're absolutely right!

Last year CFC Youth Committee discussed minimum requirements for a CYCC qualifier, and we agreed that using clocks and recording moves should be mandatory.

I was trying to convince Committee that Regular time control should be required also, but was left in minority...
    Thanks,
    Michael Barron
