CCC Discussing Chess - Posts of Interest ( Week of March 29 - April 5/12 )

Recently in the European Individual Championships, there have been a number of forfeits due to players being late for the start of the game, sometimes by only seconds, sometimes due to a time change. This is a result of the FIDE " Zero Tolerance " Rule.

    Is this good for chess?

    CCC Current Status

Though the Cooperative Chess Coalition ( CCC ), as previously posted, has ceased operation under its current constitution, it is in the midst of restructuring discussions, and a vote on adopting the restructuring proposal will be being carried out between April 9 - 16 ( one week ). In the interim, it has been decided that CCC will, however, continue its goal of raising important chess issues for discussion on its FB chess discussion page " CCC - Chess Posts of Interest ". The above post is a copy of the post on that page.

We will be announcing the results of these internal discussions in due course, hopefully by April 21.

Missing arrival by a few minutes should not be important. The long-standing rule of 1 hour forfeit seems fine to me. (the other case you mentioned was people missing the 'spring forward' time change even though it was prominently mentioned to all the players and several reminders were issued - that just means those players need to focus a lot more.

When the zero tolerance was originally announced, I just assumed it was more rubbish from the "great" Illusion-Of ...

It is bad for chess. I'm sticking with the same line as in 2008, on this very forum:

There was fuller discussion of the subject on chesstalk. It was fun to have Peter Stockhausen (who would later be away from the broad for more than ten seconds) and Gary Ruben amongst those who disagreed. Plus ça change ....
