The amended regulations for the Olympic Team (as per the 2011 AGM) have been placed in the CFC Handbook.

The Coles Notes version says that the Selection Committee chooses 3 players. The top choice qualifies for the team and the other two choices become the 1st and 2nd spare, and would play if one or more of the qualified players do not play. So the 3rd spare would be the 4th place person on the Selection Rating list, etc.

Only players who have played 10 or more CFC/FIDE games in the Mar 1, 2011 - Feb 29, 2012 time period can qualify to play on the team (at the moment that would disqualify 2010 Olympian Thomas Roussel-Roozman).

I was wondering as to why it says that Bindi's FIDE rating is 2446 FIDE when on the FIDE website it says taht his highest achieved is 2426?

Good catch...It was a type. I'll fix this in the next Selection Rating list.
    Thanks,

So if a player such as Kevin Spraggett declines, that place is named by the Committee, but if he is ineligible, it is from the Rating List. The distinction, which should not matter because he doesn't play anyway, now becomes important, or at least potentially so.

For the above and other reasons, I'm doubtful about these new rules. But I hope that the CFC will be able to abide by them. I look forward to the publication, at T minus 165 days, of the definitive Selection Committee list of three names. With the Olympiad starting 27 August in Istanbul, counting backwards in my head makes it March 15th, 2012. Is that correct?

Who are the members of the Selection Committee? I guess the CFC doesn't have to appoint them until Feb 29 / Mar 1. Personally, I think that the number one on their list must be Eric Hansen. Had Canadian Champion Bator Sambuev lost the fast chess playoff after the two tied for first in the Canadian Closed, his name would have automatically topped my version of that list.

To the best of my knowledge Kevin is eligible to participate for Canada, although his acceptance to play would be a shocker. The Selection committee could this year place three players on the National team, if Mark stays "retired".

The Members of the Selection Committee haven't been made public, I don't think.

Yes, I would think Hansen would definitely be one of the choices, but if I was a member of the selection committee, I might want to see if my choices would actually play. I know he's at University in the US, but the timing of the Olympiad, probably wouldn't be too bad school wise.

A birdie told me that at least one of the members of the Selection Committee is not from Toronto. This is not official. I do not own shares in the CFC.
