Can someone explain why the females receive the same as males? I'm all for promoting female chess, but this seems very strange to me. 95% of the entrants are normally boys yet the prize is split 50/50???? And it doesn't even cover the full expenses of a trip to WJCC...

Let's be realistic, females already have equal, if not much better opportunities than males when it comes to junior chess in Canada. WYCC, World Junior, and Olympiad are some examples. There's no need to take away from others.

Can the prize be used to go to Panamerican Junior Championship instead of WJ?

It's my understanding that the prize will be offered to the 2nd or 3rd place finishers, if the winner declines. No alternative prizes.

Bob, is that the correct interpretation from this past year. Or was that simply the rule for 2011 ?

Yes Fred. The girls prize was offered to 1st, 2nd, 3rd. All declined. In consultation with Youth coordinator it was offered to a few top girls (at the last minute), but all declined. The prize was $750 towards travel costs, so the player would still need to pay some expenses. The objective was to find a Cdn representative at the World Junior. No alternate tournaments were considered.

I don't see anything wrong with the idea to offer the first place in a youth/junior championship the choice to pick the next level tournament right after the national tournament ends.

I will explain it a bit to make it clear.

Let's take CYCC as the National Championship and WYCC, PanAm Youth and NAYCC:
    - the first place has the first pick where to go as a Canadian representative, CFC will provide the airfare money prize mentioned (in CYCC case $1000). CFC will present the prize money when is sure that the player is participating in the tournament. If the first place decide not to go in any of those 3 tournaments then the money will go to 2nd place. After picking one tournament the champion still can participate in other 2 tournaments but not as Canadian representative (except if he/she is the only Canadian representative) and CFC is not responsible for providing funding.
    - the second place, if the champion already pick, will pick one of the remaining 2 tournaments to be the Canadian representative (getting free accommodation etc) but no travel funding from CFC. Same as the champion 2nd place still can participate in other 2 tournaments but not as Canadian representative (except if he/she is the only Canadian representative) and CFC is not responsible for providing funding.
    - and so on for 3rd place down. The tiebreaker can be the performance rating.

Similar idea for Canadian champion going to one of the next 2 layers of U20: Worlds Junior and PanAm Junior.

I modeled this after European countries who are giving the choices between WYCC, EYCC and Scholastic CC.

    Andrei
