What I assume is the final list of participants for the 2011 World Cup was released today with some noticable omissions. First off the loser of the Anand-Gelfand match gets an automatic berth in the next Candidates matches (2nd half of 2012), so they don't need to play. However, the following 5 top 10 players also chose not to play, perhaps not wanting to be part of the system or hoping to nab one of the three rating spots available for the Candidates. Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian would appear to be locks for two of the rating spots, although it's not clear if Carlsen will be any more inclined to play this time. The 3 other top ten players passing on the World Cup were Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, and Hikaru Nakamura.

So this leaves the top 8 seeds (along with their potential rd 16 opponents) as:

1. Karjakin (Dominguez Perez)
2. Ivanchuk (Vachier-Lagrave)
3. Ponomariov (Navara)
4. Mamedyarov (Vallejo Pons)
5. Gashimov (Almasi)
6. Grischuk (Vitiugov)
7. Radjabov (Jakovenko)
8. Kamsky (Svidler)

This is of course all unofficial........
