    2011 Canadian Closed/Zonal Champion

    May 6-11- Guelph, Ont. Entries – 29.

The new Canadian Champion is GM Bator Sambuev, Quebec (CFC – 2750; FIDE – 2513 ).

He and IM Eric Hansen of Alberta (CFC – 2572; FIDE – 2425 ), tied in the main tournament, scoring 7.5/9 pts., both being undefeated.

The first rapid play-off game was drawn ( 80 moves ). Bator won the second, to win the Championship.

Although he wins the right to represent Canada at the FIDE World Cup later this year, which is the first phase of the next world championship cycle, there is a FIDE residency requirement that he will not have fulfilled by the tournament ( he recently immigrated to Canada from Russia, and just switched his federation ) - there is a hefty FIDE " fee " problem. So Eric, as runner-up, will likely replace Bator at the World Cup - a very worthy replacement. But Bator will be qualified to play on the Canadian Olympiad team by the time of the tournament in 2012.

    Congratulations Bator !!
