Default Jason Cao Represents Canada in U 10 WYCC

Article by Arnold Lim, News Staff, Victoria News, on Oct. 15, 2010 on VicNews.com:

Chess phenom takes on the world

Nine-year-old Saanich resident Jason Cao will be representing Canada at the World Youth Chess Championships in Halkidiki, Greece.

Jason Cao has checked his way to Greece.

The nine-year-old Saanich resident is in Halkidiki, Greece for a two-week stay where he will represent his country and his age group at the World Youth Chess Championships.

For a Grade 5 student with only two years of chess experience and no formal coach, his progression has been amazing.

“He has progressed faster than most players his age because he has more potential than most players,” said Brian Raymer, Victoria Junior Chess president.

“He is a good player. He has a good chance at the world championships to have a good finish.”

This year’s WYCC tournament boasts the largest turnout of players ever, with more than 80 countries involved and more than a 100 players in his under 10 age group alone.

Cao will be one of 24 Canadians at the tournament but the only one from Vancouver Island and only the fourth in Island history to qualify for the event.

“He is very keen and enthusiastic loves the game, has fun, he has got the right attitude,” Raymer said.

“I think it is great that he is representing Canada and that he is from Victoria, we are sure he is going o have fun and do well … By making it to the world's he as has already achieved great results.”

The young Cao is deep in preparations for the tournament leaving school at noon everyday instead of the normal 3 p.m. to come home to practise chess, a routine he has followed for three weeks leading up to the event.

Training four to five hours every day has been grueling for the Campus View elementary school student but his confidence is high.

“I didn’t think I could get really good and go to the world championships, but I think I have improved,” Cao said. “My thoughts were wrong and I might be able to get first.”

He will play one match every day from Oct. 20 to 31 missing Halloween in order to follow his dream. With each match expected to last approximately four hours, he knows he has to be mentally prepared for battle.

“It pays off to study … When you are finished a tournament and you done really well because you beat a lot of strong players you feel happy,” he said.

“I am hoping to get a grand master title (one of the highest honours in chess) when I am about 15. If I am a really good grand master then my goal is to become world champion.”

He had Black in Round 7 too... Great performance. Now he is clearly the one to beat - I hope he continues to play well.

This is amazing for Jason and Canada.

I have to admit that I didn't do any scouting of our best chances going into the WYCC, and I really wasn't familiar with him.

Now, looking at his recent adult events in BC, I would have to say that his strength from these, heading to Greece seemed to be somewhere between 1700 & 2000, putting him in the running for 1st (along with 20 or 30 others).

He's having a great run and let's hope for a wonderful future.

Jason Cao World Youth Chess Champion "A" Channel interview with Greg Churchill tonight at 6 pm http://www.atv.ca/victoria/

AND -- in other great news..... posted on Chesstalk.com today...

World Champion Jason Cao will receive from the Chess'n Math Association (CMA)....
Congratulations to our new World Under 10 champion!

Jason has been an active CMA participant for the last two years at tournaments which are organized by the Victoria Chess Society. He is 9 yrs old and is a grade 5 student at Campus View Elementary School. I spoke with Brian Raymer (the awesome Victoria organizer who with his gang, will be hosting the 2011 National Finals of the Canadian Chess Challenge) this morning and he tells me that Jason became curious about the game when he passed by the Victoria gang playing outdoor chess at Willows Beach (they do that from May to September on Saturdays from 10 am - noon). You can see a picture at the Victoria Chess Society webpage:

    http://victoriajuniorchess.pbworks.com/

Shortly thereafter, Jason took part in a chess camp which was put on by Greg Churchill (Greg has been teaching chess daily for nine years in several Victoria schools) and earned his first official Chess'n Math rating!

The Chess'n Math Association, Canada's National Scholastic Chess Organization, is proud to announce that we are awarding Jason with a $1,000 gift certificate for his INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE!

He will be able to purchase $1,000 worth of chess books & equipment at our Strategy Game store (on-line or through Brian) FOR FREE!

    www.strategygames.ca

Congratulations again Jason! We are all very proud of you!

    Larry Bevand
    Executive Director
    Chess'n Math Association

The Chess'n Math Association is a non-profit organization which was created in 1985. When you purchase from us, you are contributing to the development of chess in our schools as profits are reinvested in scholastic chess.

We thank you for your continued support!
