Charity Kids Tournament at Branksome Hall - April 8

Phiona Mutesi is a chess player from Uganda whose inspiring story became a book, Queen of Katwe, and then a film by the same name that premiered at TIFF last year. Growing up in a poor area of Kampala, Phiona's life was changed through her success in chess. She rose to national fame in Uganda as a three-time girls chess champion and then as the first female player to win the National Junior Championship. She also represented her country internationally at Chess Olympiads in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016.

Phiona will be the guest of honour at a charity chess tournament for children (grades 1-8) at Branksome Hall on April 8. Proceeds from this event will support both girls and women living in extreme poverty in Uganda, and youth living in poverty in Toronto.

Tickets for entry in the tournament are $50, for which a tax receipt will be issued. Even if you cannot attend, donations are welcome.
