10 d. Qualification for the Continental Championship

The Continental Championship is important to Canadian Masters because it qualifies 4 players per year to the World Cup. Currently this event is lumped in with other events whereby we send our highest rated willing player.

I believe that the Vice Champion of our Zonal should be granted this right. Comments welcome.

Sounds like a good idea. The only problem: Continental is every year, while Canadian Closed is usually every 2 years.

Good point Victor. In a way this is a happy problem. We could give the Vice Champion first refusal for both years unless he/she qualifies for the World Cup the first time. This year we sent Anton again even though he qualified in the previous year. This feels a little less than correct.

Another variable is how many of our players will be given room and board. This year we were given 4 berths instead of the traditional single one.

This year one of the prizes for the 2017 Canadian Champion was to also be the official representative for the 2018 Continental - that could be thought of as a one-off. However, in line with what you are saying, I think having the 2017 Vice-Champion being our representative for the 2019 Continental would be a good plan.

The 2017 vice-champion is qualified to go to the RIDEF (rencontre internationale des échecs francophones) which is a GM norm tournament in Tunisia. We could also send him to the Continental.

This past year we did wind up sending everyone who applied or wanted to go so sending Anton didn't cost anyone a spot. When we only have one spot it gets a little more complicated.

Lately we have been paying some of the travel cost to the official rep (which might be the bigger deal in terms of funding someone to a Continental who has already qualified for the World Cup), which was complicated this year because we had multiple reps.

In the case of Bator he is being funded to the 2017 World Cup and now also
to the 2018 Continental (which is a qualifier for the 2019 World Cup).
