The CFC Regular Chess Post – Jan. 9/12 – Canadian Junior/Girls Champion

Open Winner: NM David Zhang, of Calgary, Alberta. He won the 2011 CYCC U16 Canadian Championship, the 2011 Alberta Junior, and did well at the WYCC. He has improved rapidly over the last year and his future progress looks hopeful.
Junior Girls Winner: Regina-
Veronicka Kalaydina ( 1947 ) of Calgary, with an undefeated 4.5/5 pts.
Date: Jan. 5 – 8.
Place: Calgary Chess Club, # 274 -3359 27 St. N.E.
Type: Open - 7 round swiss; Girls - 6 player round-robin.
History : Since 1970, the Canadian Junior Championship has been a flagship event on the Chess Federation of Canada’s calendar. Attracting the best junior talent in the country, it not only serves to determine our undisputed junior champion, but also to qualify that champion to the World Junior Championship. A number of former participants have even gone on to later win the Canadian Closed and Zonal Championship, a tradition one can only hope is continued by this year’s crop. More importantly, remember that some of the best players ever, not the least of which being Bobby Fischer, used their national junior championship as a stepping stone in their rise to prominence.
