Point form book review by NM Kevin Pacey: Understanding the Marshall Attack by IM David Vigorito (Gambit 2010)
- repertoire book for Ruy Lopez Marshall Attack defenders
- written by an American IM and chess teacher
- Introduction explains the logic behind the moves of the Marshall and Anti-Marshall variations, and briefly deals with Black deviations (at move 9 and 11) from the book's Marshall Accepted repertoire that's based on 11...c6
- a brief Recommendations section serves as a study guide to the book
- there is a short section devoted to typical Marshall ideas
- the author gives much explanatory prose and detailed analysis, with complete games sprinkled throughout the notes
- a possible problem is that Vigorito doesn't offer Black fully satisfactory ways to play for a win against everything, particularly in the main lines of the Marshall Accepted after 12.d4 Bd6 13.Re1 Qh4 14.g3 Qh3 (especially after 15.Be3)
- in short, the book provides an excellent and compact (191 page) repertoire and guide for the Marshall and Anti-Marshall, but readers looking to win with Black at all costs may wish to obtain supplementary material elsewhere, or do their own analysis in some cases.
