Point form book review by NM Kevin Pacey: Attacking the Spanish by IM Sabino Brunello (Quality Chess 2009)

- repertoire book for Ruy Lopez defenders
- written by an Italian IM Marshall Attack practitioner
- covers three Black gambits vs. the Ruy Lopez (the Schliemann, Gajewski and Marshall)
- repertoire coverage vs. the Schliemann is based on 4...dxe4 5.Nxe4 Nf6
- repertoire coverage of the Marshall Accepted, i.e. 7.Bb3 0-0 8.c3 d5 (8...d6 9.h3 Na5 10.Bc2 d5!? constitutes the Gajewski) 9.exd5 Nxd5 10.Nxe5 Nxe5 11.Rxe5, is based on 11...c6
- the author combines much explanation with detailed variations, with themes noted at the start of each chapter
- the author gives much original analysis
- complete games are found throughout the book
- a possible problem is that Brunello doesn't present ways for Black to by correct means bypass one or more drawing lines that White has at his disposal vs. all three of the book's Black gambits
- in short, the book provides three sharp options for Black against the Ruy Lopez (in 279 pages), with a fine balance of explanation and theory, although readers wanting to win with Black at all costs will need help from beyond the book's pages.
