Point form book review by NM Kevin Pacey: Fighting the Ruy Lopez by GM Milos Pavlovic (Everyman 2009)

- repertoire book for defending against the Ruy Lopez with the Marshall Attack
- written by a Serbian GM Marshall Attack practitioner
- covers all likely White deviations within the Ruy Lopez that a Marshall Attack player might encounter
- repertoire coverage of the Marshall Accepted is based on 11...c6
- Introduction sets out the ideas behind the Marshall Attack
- each chapter begins with a discussion of the relevant ideas and plans for both sides before moving on to the chapter's theoretical coverage
- the author gives much original analysis
- complete games are sprinkled throughout the book
- a possible problem is that Pavlovic doesn't offer ways for Black to avoid cetain drawing lines that White has at his disposal, for example in the main line of the Marshall
- in short, the book provides a nice, compact (174 page) repertoire against the Ruy Lopez, with a good balance of theory and understanding, but readers looking to win with Black at all costs will need additional ideas.
