Fwiw, here's the wiki re: Rat Race:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_race

One of my pet peeves is the great, grinding rat race of modern life. Many years back, as a trivial example, I was first to get to an intersection as a pedestrian. Three other pedestrians (including at least one woman, even), one by one, came from behind me, and all outflanked me on the sidewalk to the left, but all were then on the sidewalk facing outside of the crossing lines pedestrians are supposed to cross the intersection within. Just before the light finished changing, even, they were already starting to walk into the intersection in front of me, to get within the crossing lines, thus all cutting me off if I were to start walking as I had been entitled to (and fully legally).

On a religious note, probably nowadays most people don't even give thanks before having a bite to eat (at least at home), perhaps if only lest they lose a few precious seconds in the rat race. The irony is that those who do give thanks may better increase their chances of getting ahead in what might be seen as the real 'rat race' of life.

Somewhat related to the rat race, perhaps - hoarding (now in the pandemic, or, in principle, at any time):
