The bit about upgrading your phone service is not always a scam. I followed one of those promotions and got my data increased from 6.5 Gigabytes per month to 10.5 Gigabytes per month for free some months ago. I got another such text for increasing to 15.5 Gigabytes but this time they wanted to up the cost by $10 per month. Since I don't use much data (always near wifi) I declined that opportunity. Too bad you can't sell your unused data allowance. I think my usage has been about 0.25 Gigabytes when it was a particularly busy month.
