Have a great tournament everyone !! It’s one of the largest weekend tournaments in Toronto in a very long while !!

It was a truly classy and great tournament.

USA GM Friedel, and Can. GM Sambuev tied for first - Can. IM Samsonkin defeated USA GM Nakamura. A full report will be coming.

I managed my first draws ever against masters - 2 of them in the Open section - quite satisfied given that I hover usually on either side of 1800.

Brian Fiedler and Bryan Lamb and team have now set the bar pretty high for future large Toronto tournaments. Let's hope this is the start of a trend !!

I just checked the official Lamb website, and no results are posted.

The Open Section results are on MonRoi ( came out funny when I tried to copy them ):

I know of one error in the cross-table. In the last round I got crushed by Jesse Wang - it wasn't a draw as shown. So Jesse has 2 pts., and I have 1 pt.

It was a truly classy and great tournament.
I managed my first draws ever against masters - 2 of them in the Open section - quite satisfied given that I hover usually on either side of 1800.

I always wonder why you go up a section and in this tournament you proved that you deserved to be there.

Me, similarly rated, played 5 players lower rated than me and only scored 3-2, losing to players in Grade 8 & 9. And the worse game I played in a few years made it on to the monroi website. I had some kind of brain fatigue and was struggling to concentrate the whole game, mixing up lines and playing moves a few moves later than I shoud have. A strange experience. My other loss was a misplayed move order while mating (after sacking two pieces) which allowed a defence and my wins were all blunders/cheapos not worthy of publication.

Not all of the 2 brillancies and 3 best game winners are on the monroi site. I hope to see them published.

Hi Erik:

Thanks for your nice comments.

The 2 master draws , and a very good game, that I lost, against an IM, may not be my best games ever, but it is a milestone for me in terms of quality of play in one tournament. I have never defeated or drawn a master before, and here I got 2 draws against masters.

I have found since I have been playing up ( this is my third time and I do do it with some trepidation ), that I actually play stronger in weekend tournaments, in Open sections, against stronger players, than I do in my own section at Scarborough CC. Not sure why that is, but I've now played up 3 times, and feel that I can justify to myself being there, given that I give my opponents a good game. I need not win, to be satisfied -- just to have played well, and made the other guy work a bit.

I admit to a bit of an adrenaline rush with this new phase of my chess career, after some 45 years ( especially as a regular 1800 performer ). I am not implying that I can necessarily do that well in my < 2000 category, but only that if I'm going to expend the effort, and I play credibly, why not play up against much stronger opponents every game? Should I begin to get results that show me getting killed regularly, then I would have to re-evaluate - I don't want to waste better players' time.

My Rd. 1-3 games are posted, with annotations on Chess5 ( www.chess5.com ) . Click on " Public Games " on the homepage.
