In Rd. 1, facing # 13, India, Canada ( # 48 ) didn't fare too badly, losing 2.5 - 1.5 ( Bluvshtein, Zugic, and Noritsyn drew; Charbonneau lost; rest day for Roussel-Roozman ).

In Rd. 1 for the women, Canada ( # 53 ) played Cuba ( # 25 ) and lost 3.5 - .5 ( Yuan drew; Khoudgarian, Kagramanov and Smith lost, rest day for Barron ).

Rd. 2 in progress ( 11:56 AM ): National Team

Bluvshtein ( on Bd. 1 ) is up a P, and appears to be threatening to go up a second P.
The other three boards ( Zugic; Roussel-Roozman; Noritsyn ) still seem relatively equal to this patzer.

Canada's women's team defeated Costa Rica 3.5 - .5 today in Rd. 2 ( Khoudgarian drew; Yuan , Kagramanov and Smith won ).

( 2:25 PM ) - Canada's national team is leading Bolivia 3-0 ( Zugic; Roussel-Roozman and Noritsyn have won ).

In Bluvshtein's Bd. 1 game, Zambrana is up a passed P. Each has R + B ( opposite colours ) + a P ( Zambrana has 2 P's ). Seems to me it is a possible draw, though Mark is down a P, because of the opposite coloured B's. But hard to call because a set of R's are still on. Maybe a stronger player can give his/her opinion on this at this point.

In Rd. 2, Bluvshtein drew the last game, a pawn down. So Canada's national team defeats Bolivia 3.5 - .5, the same score the women's team got against Costa Rica.

In Rd. 3 the pairings are:

Women's - Bd. 40. Fiji ( # 98 - 2 MP ) vs Canada ( # 53 - 2 MP )

The Canadian teams are substantially stronger. We should hope for good results tomorrow.

Hi Bob:

Glad to do it - it is partly because I believe that people must post here, things that can't be found on ChessTalk, or at least in a somewhat different format with perhaps some different details, if the CFC Chess Forum is to remain active and relevant. That's why it is great when you and some of the Governors post things here that are not on ChessTalk. It gives people a reason to check the site, if they know there will be something new.

I wish Governors would post more replies and start new threads, on things that are lively on their own private discussion board. It would give members a chance to reply to their ideas, and give the governors input and feedback on CFC issues. This would truly make this a Canadian chess site of interest and value.

( 9:45 AM ) Canadian Women's team ( # 53 ) is playing England ( # 31 ) in Rd. 4 on Bd. 17.

On the second board, WFM Yuanling Yuan of Canada faces IM Dagne Ciuiksyte.

I ( read Fritz ) am analyzing this game live on the chess website, Chess5 ( www.chess5.com ) [ Yuanling is a member of my chess club, Scarborough CC ]. Go to the homepage, and click on " Public Games " to get the November games list. Find the game and click on " View " . You will get a board and the score to follow the game ( it takes a few seconds to load ). The updating is not entirely continuous , but from time to time.

Bob Armstrong

( 12.05 PM ) Bluvshtein lost and Charbonneau won. Other 2 games still in progress.

Zugic is at material equality.

Roussel-Roozman is down the exchange, but has a P compensation.

Bob

Bob Armstrong
11-16-2008, 01:25 PM
( 12:23 PM ) Khoudgharian has drawn. All other games still in progress.

Yuan is at material equality, as is Smith.

Barron is at material equality, and both have passed pawns.

( 1:08 PM ) Now Irina has won her game on Bd. 4 so Canada leads 1.5 -.5

Dagne got a nice tactical exchange where she has ended up with R + 2 connected, passed pawns on the 6th rank vs B + N.

Hazel's game is still in progress but she is down a passed P.

Bob

Bob Armstrong

Yuanling has lost. The match is tied so far.

Hazel's game is still in progress, but to me she looks lost - she has N vs 2 connected passed P's on the 3rd and 4th rank, and her K is way out of position.

Immediate Update - Hazel just resigned.

So final score : Canada 1.5 - 2.5 England .

Bob

Bob Armstrong
11-16-2008, 03:06 PM
Charbonneau won. Bluvshtein and Roussel-Roozman lost. Zugic drew, down a P.

Scotland wins 2.5 - 1.5

Bob Armstrong

Canada lost both matches in Rd. 4 : 1.5 - 2.5 [ National team ( # 43 ) vs Scotland ( # 46 ); Women's ( # 53 ) vs England ( # 31 )].

Pairings for Rd. 5 :

National Team - Bd. 27 Yemen ( # 82/ 4 MP/ 6.5 GP ) vs Canada ( # 43/ 4 MP/ 10.5 GP )
Women's - Bd. 21 Nigeria ( # 111/ 4 MP/ 5.5 GP ) vs Canada ( # 53/ 4 MP/ 9.5 GP )

As in Rd. 3, Canada's opponents for Rd. 5 are substantially weaker, and we should see some good results.

Canada's National team is now in 52nd place ( of 154 - worse than their ranking ) and the women's team is 40th ( of 114 - better than their ranking ).

( 9:59 AM ) Canada's National Team is playing Iraq on Bd 36.

Bd.1 ( WFM Yuanling Yuan ) and Bd. 4 ( Irina Barron ) seem relatively equal.

Bd. 4 Material is equal.

( 1:07 PM ) Charbonneau and Zugic have lost on Bds. 1 & 2.

Roussel-Roozman won on Bd. 3

Iraq is leading 1:2

On Bd. 4 , Nikolay is down a P, but it is backward and Nikolay seems to be holding. 4 of his 5 pawns are on the opposite colour to his opponent's B, so Nikolay's N seems stronger than the B.

Canada's National team ( # 48 ) continued to struggle today in Rd. 6 as they lost 1.5 - 2.5 to the # 92 ranked Iraq.
But the story was quite different with the continuing good performance of the women's team ( # 53 ) who defeated the # 57 ranked Mexico 1.5 - 2.5 .

In Rd. 7 tomorrow the pairings, with some stats, are:

Bd. 42 Macau ( # 133/ 5 MP/ 9.5 GP/ standing at # 106 ) vs National Team ( # 48/ 5 MP/ 14 GP/ standing at # 86 ) - a substantially weaker opponent - Canada should make up some ground on this one.
Bd 12 (!) Slovenia ( # 15/ 8 MP/ 16 GP/ standing at # 17 ) vs Women's Team ( # 53/ 8 MP/ 16 GP/ standing at # 30 ) - a very tough match for the young Canadian team - as Duncan Smith, Hazel's father, noted on ChessTalk, the average rating of the top 4 Slovanians is 2359. Ours is 2124 !

A critical position after 43 Black move, where White advantage must materialize to a point.
http://www.chessvideos.tv/bimg/1lx6tiwo2ack4.png

Hard to say why White moved 44. Kf3. An idea that a bishop is pinned flags red the move. After 44... Rb3 45. Ra7 Bxd5 White lost its most valuable pawn. Lets back to diagram. White bishop has two good squares - e2 (maybe passive, but it frees a knight, i.e. Nc6-e5 and a f7-pawn is under attack) and b5 (the idea is to exchange bishops and promote a d-pawn.) After 44. Bb5 Rb3 follows 45. Bc6!

Probably Dina miscalculated this position missing a nice saving black move (59....)

I prefer this position as it gives more possibilities - 55. Ke3 with Ne4 or Rd5.

After 7 rounds , how are the women doing? Here is my post on ChessTalk today:

The women's team ( # 53 ) beat Mexico ( # 57 ), a peer team.

The other three wins were expected , but the scores are high : Costa Rica ( # 80 - 3.5 - .5 ); Fiji ( # 98 - 4 - 0 ); Nigeria ( # 111 - 4 - 0 ).

The losses were against strong teams : Cuba ( # 25 ); England ( # 31 ); Slovania ( # 12 ). The score against England is not bad - 2.5 - 1.5.

So I think the opinion that they are doing well ( perhaps not " very " well ) is justified. They are certainly playing their # 53 ranking. They currently stand in # 47th place.

Rd. 8 sees Canada's Women's team playing Belarus on Bd. 18.

WFM Yuanling Yuan ( 2157 ) is on second board ( 18.2 ) playing WIM Nadezhda Azarova ( 2308 ).

Since Yuanling is a member of my chess club, Scarborough CC, I ( read Fritz ) will be doing live analysis of her game on the chess website, Chess5 ( www.chess5.com ). When you get to the homepage, click on " Public Games " to get the November list of games. Find the game, and then click on " View " and you will get a board and the score, with analysis ( it takes a few seconds for the game to load ). Hope you find it interesting.

Dina won on Bd. 2. Irina's board doesn't show any result, but there have been no moves and the clocks have stopped. Irina has a clear win , up 2 P's with each side having only a B left. I'll go out on a limb and say Irina won and it's just a glitch on site that it is not yet shown on the board.

So Canada ( # 53 ) defeats Tunisia ( # 103 ) 4-0 ( same score as the national team won by ).

Bd. 23. National Team ( # 48/ 12 MP/ 27.5 GP/ standing at # 36 ) vs Columbia ( # 56/ 12 MP/ 23 GP/ standing at # 37 ).

Bd. 30. Women's Team ( # 53/ 10 MP/ 22.5 GP/ standing at # 58 ) vs Portugal ( # 49/ 10 MP/ 20.5 GP/ standing at # 55 ).

Both are pretty much peer group match-ups. Wins will put us above our original rankings.

The round is on Tuesday ( Monday is a rest day ). I believe it starts at 4:00 AM EST !
