Failure to do so and not meeting the requirements could result in withdrawal from the tournament and/or ineligibility for awards.
Other Events: A summer outdoor Chess Fest will take place before the CYCC from July 20th to 21st. The BC Open will take place after the CYCC starting July 24th (evening) and ending July 26th. Hi,

Can you inform the tentative dates and venue for the Canadian Open 2009 in Edmonton so that we can book the hotel and flight earlier? Do you also have the projected prizes for the Open and Categorial Sections? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks:
Ferdinand DS

Hi Ferdy:

The 2009 Canadian Open and CYCC are not being held together. The CO will be in Edmonton from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday July 19. At the time the CFC accepted the bid, the organizers did not know if it would be 9 or 10 rounds.

As to prizes, the bid states : " Because of the sponsorships already secured to cover operating expenses and promotion, we guarantee that the prize fund will be at least 100% of entry fees collected. There will be class prizes...."

Micah Hughey presented the bid for the organizing committee.

Thanks guys for the immediate responses. The reasons why I was asking this information is for practical and economical reasons.
1) The earlier participants can booked flights and hotel accommodations, the better chances of getting cheaper deals.
2) The approximate prize fund distributions in different sections will allow participants to have an idea if participating in the tournament is worth the payback of the expenses.
3) It will allow employees to apply vacation leaves in advance notification which will potentially result to leave approvals.

Thanks!:)

Although, it should be the tournament director's discretion to implement tournament sections and prizes, i would like to propose a tournament standard for Chess Tournament Organizers.

Limit the number of Sections to 3. Namely: Open, Under 1900 and Under 1600.
70 % of Entry Fees will be given as prizes called Prize Fund.
15% of Entry Fees will be donated to the CFC (Olympic Fund) or rating fees.
15% of Entry Fees will be allocated for the Tournament Organizer for expenses. City Halls and Schools can be used for tournament venues with the primary reason to raise money for Olympic Fund to get significant discounts for the events.
Major modifications will be on the distribution of prizes namely: (Excel file can be designed to allocate the prizes by just merely entering a single value in the Total Entry fee cell).
In the Open Section, 40% of the Prize Fund will be allocated and 25% of the participants shall receive cash prizes as per tournament director's distribution. So, for 20 players, the prizes should be until 5th (25% of 20 participants).
In the Under 1900 and Under 1600 sections, 30% of the prize funds will be allocated for both sections and 25% of the participants shall receive cash prizes as per tournament director's distribution. So for 40 players in the Under 1900, the prize distribution should be until the 10th prize (25% of 40 participants).
In cases of ties, tie breaks will be used to determine who shall receive the appropriate prize according to the determined ranking in the tournament standing.
No more entry fee discounts for juniors and seniors. Ages don't matter in chess games.

Here is a sample prize distributions which i thought is more attractive that the standard 1st, 2nd and 3rd places prize distribution. It's based on 100 players, $100 entry fee and the total number of players playing in each section. I will be more than happy to receive my entry fee if i played on the average than bring home empty handed and used it again for the next tourney! These are just my thoughts!

Total Entry Fees $10,000.00 Based on Entry Fee = $100 , Number of Players = 100
Olympic Fund $1,500.00 15.00% 15% of Total Entry Fees
Organizer's Expenses $1,500.00 15.00% 15% of Total Entry Fees

Prize Fund $7,000.00

Percentage
Total Open Prizes $2,800.00 is 40% of Prize Fund Based of 20 Open Players where 25% of players will receive prizes. 5 players so until 5th places.

2nd $750.00 26.79%

5th $200.00 7.14%

Sum of Open Prizes $2,800.00

Total U1900 Prizes $2,100.00 - is 30% of Prize Fund Based of 40 U19 Players where 25% of players will receive prizes. 10 players so until 10th places.
1st $320.00 15.24%
2nd $300.00 14.29%
3rd $280.00 13.33%
4th $240.00 11.43%
5th $220.00 10.48%
6th $200.00 9.52%
7th $180.00 8.57%
8th $140.00 6.67%
9th $120.00 5.71%
10th $100.00 4.76%
Sum of U19 Prizes $2,100.00

Total U1600 Prizes $2,100.00 - is 30% of Prize Fund Based of 40 U16 Players where 25% of players will receive prizes. 10 players so until 10th places.
1st $320.00 15.24%
2nd $300.00 14.29%
3rd $280.00 13.33%
4th $240.00 11.43%
5th $220.00 10.48%
6th $200.00 9.52%
7th $180.00 8.57%
8th $140.00 6.67%
9th $120.00 5.71%
10th $100.00 4.76%
Sum of U16 Prizes $2,100.00

Am just making a proposal just to make tournaments attract more participants. Let me hear your thoughts! No offense.
